The Power of Music

Music is not only what we do, it is a part of who we are, both as a Fraternity and as men.

For musicians and music educators, the performances and rehearsals are life and livelihood, intrinsically related to that which we dedicate ourselves to.  But these things are more than a job.  The long hours spent in practice rooms, across countless music schools, are not merely a soulless devotion to a craft that will one day support the musician and his family.  Of course they are more than that.  Who would spend that much time on something that was only a bottom-line, monetary venture?  Some might, true, though not nearly as many.  No, we play because we love it, because something sparked inside of us when we heard an instrument or musical piece.  It may have been at an older age, or it may have been before we had coherent memories in childhood.  But each Sinfonian, and I would contend each human being, has felt that spark that music ignites.

Music has the ability to enhance a mood, alter a mood, ruin an otherwise perfect moment or elevate that same moment to a transcendent level.

Music can teach a young child patience and perseverance, it can teach coordination, relaxation, work ethic, organization, and can teach us to work better with others in collaborative endeavors.

Music can heal the mind and spirit, it can enlighten and inspire in ways that cannot easily be described with mere words.

Music can unite.  It can unite nations and peoples, cultures and generations.

It is all of these things that Sinfonia stands for.  We unite men of music through our chapters and alumni groups, national events and intimate get-togethers.  We heal the mind and spirit through uplifting acts such as the Mills Music Mission.  We instill in men the abilities and virtues necessary to be manly musicians and musicianly men.

This Convention is about more than our triennial gathering.  It is more than legislation, more than education, more than the awards and honors we will bestow upon our brothers.  It is all of these things as well, yes, but not solely comprised of such material trappings.  The National Convention is a living symbol of the unity that music creates.  As a brotherhood, we are a reflection of this unity, this healing and growing, this lifting up of mankind.

That is why we hope each brother who is able will come to the 2012 National Convention.  For those who have attended past Conventions, we hope you remember those experiences fondly, and that it inspires you to attend this year in Orlando.  And for those who haven’t attended a national event, Convention can be a transformational experience that you will never forget.

So join us, July 11-15, 2012, in Orlando, Florida as we experience and celebrate The Power of Music!

yes! music is powerful, as it unites men such as the upcoming National convention this July. I'm also a music lover that influenced by the bond that it resembles. I agree to the many things that music can do. It can unite us and influence as simple as our mood..
